Description
“Hill End has been the perfect subject for Daffurn.”
Distinguished Professor Peter McNeil FAHA
HILL END ENTANGLED showcases fine artist Ryan Daffurn’s sustained engagement with the mining town of Hill End, NSW and surrounds. Ryan is among Australia’s most talented young painters and one of very few working in the representational tradition. He has held many solo exhibitions and won numerous awards, including the Hornsby Art Prize and the Lethbridge 20,000. The site of Hill End is a longstanding place of pilgrimage for Australian artists, who have engaged with its history, natural beauty and unique atmosphere for many decades. Featuring more than forty large plates and many smaller ones, this is a luxurious book to be perused and pondered for years to come.
This edition contains a Foreword by Dr Christine Kirkegard and an Introduction by English art critic Alexander Adams which, in their respective unique ways, position Daffurn as a worthy heir of the European and Australian painting traditions. The artist himself also reflects powerfully on his creative practice and the importance of Hill End to a still young Australian art tradition.
This is a limited edition hardback of 200 signed and numbered copies. Once they are sold, they are sold. Do not miss out.
“Speaking first and foremost as a painter, I admire Daffurn’s powerful vision, his technical accomplishment and the memorability of his art. Writing as an art critic, I judge Daffurn to be a serious artist and potentially an important painter of his era, regardless of nationality. Rejecting easy rewards, striking out on his own path, striving for the resonant image, craving the strongest flavour, Daffurn has already proved his worth. This publication is the latest step towards wider recognition of Ryan Daffurn as one of Australia’s most remarkable painters.”
Alexander Adams, from the Introduction to Hill End Entangled
“Ryan Daffurn’s artistic exploration of the regional landscapes of Hill End offer the viewer a privileged insight into the achievements and growing reputation of a serious and significant Australian artist.”
Dr Christine Kirkegard, from the Foreword to Hill End Entangled
HILL END ENTANGLED will be launched at Lethbridge Gallery, 136 Latrobe Terrace, Paddington QLD, on October 10th, 6-8PM.
